As a budding struggling entrepreneur one of the biggest killers to your career development is procrastination. Putting things off is going to steal away everything you want to build. For me writing posts and marketing my blog can become a chore which I procrastinate. I like to comment on multiple blogs to promote my site (you should comment on this blog to promote your site, otherwise you are wasting your time reading) and just over the weekend I looked at my RSS reader and there were 91 new posts which I needed to comment on. I wanted to procrastinate but I didn’t (because I am getting way better at stopping myself procrastinating). I want to offer you a few simple tips which can help you stop procrastinating.

    1. Do Easy Things First
This is one of the greatest things I can do to stop myself procrastinating. I hate big tasks, so I break them down and do the little things I can first before I tackle the bigger things. At the moment I am attempting site flipping to make some money and the big thing, which is harder for me to do, is to write articles for the sites I am flipping. So I do everything I can but that first, such as site design which I enjoy and then once that is done I find focusing on the bigger things easier.

    2. Take a Sledge Hammer to The Items in Your “Too Hard” Basket
Similar to what I do above. I have what I call my ‘too hard basket’ which is a basket I mentally throw things in which are too hard to deal with. However, I know I cannot always do this, so I take a sledge hammer to my too hard basket and I break the things in it up into tiny little pieces and do them one at a time. In NA (Narcotics Anonymous) they have a saying that says ‘just for today’. Meaning I will stay off drugs just for today, because that is easier to say than to say I will stay off them forever. We can use this same method and break down big tasks into smaller ones we can easily achieve.

    3. Set a Time Aside to Do Things
Set aside time in your diary to do things and don’t fill that time up with anything else. Imagine that this time is like a date with a beautiful girl (or boy) that you would never want to miss. Make a time to do the things you need to do and stick to it

    4. Kill Distractions
Distractions are the major cause of procrastination so you need to kill them. If TV is your distraction do things without the TV on. For me surfing the net is a distraction so sometimes when I need to write a report or a post I will go somewhere with my laptop where I am offline and will write it there where I am less distracted.

    5. Keep Your Goals in Focus
Remember why you are doing this things you are doing. If you forget it will become easy to put things off. I know why I am working online to become an entrepreneur. Infact my desktop background on my computer says “Goal: $50/Day” is huge writing so I can remember my goal and work towards it. This helps me stay on task.

    6. Use Your Spare Minutes
I have many spare minutes during the day so I make sure that my phone doubles as a note taker. So when I have spare time I can jot down ideas, or develop ideas. I also have a tasks list of things I need to do so in my spare minutes I will go through that list and pick a few tasks that I can do in my spare time.

Now we cannot stop procrastination completely, but we can narrow it down so we can be most effective. What tips do you have? Leave them in the comments below

You have just about covered how not to procrastinate. You did not say make a list in your tip headings even though you sort of indicated making a list. For myself, making a list with the most important to do given priority has always served me well.

I completely agree with you. Having things in lists in vital. Otherwise I can’t get my head around all the stuff I have to do. Great tip

I have to disagree with #1, I find doing the big tasks first helps relieve some of the burden off of your shoulders so you can continue on with the little things with less stress. It may take a bit more discipline, but if you do the big thing first and get it over with, you’ll thank yourself later.

Cool, you don’t have to agree with everything. But I think #1 will work for a lot of people.
I admire your strategy, I wish I had the discipline to do that (but I don’t)
